"The Secret"

With all this hype and fuss going on about Rhonda Byrne's book " The Secret", I decided to buy a copy and test it out. If anyone is unfamiliar with the concept behind the book (and movie too), it is basically all about the Law of Attraction. If you think positive thoughts and truly believe them, then they will manifest, and vice versa, if you think and believe negatively then you will attract negativity.

So I am about halfway through the book and a few days ago I decided to test it out. I told the "Universe" as they say, that I wanted $100 in my mail. It says not to ask how it will get there, but just to know it will get there, believe it will get here, and then leave it to the Universe. Lo and behold, I check my mail today and I have a check for $100 from Chase Bank that is mine all mine as long as I open a checking account with them. Now, funny thing is that I have been planning on switching over to Chase anyways since that is bank my payroll is drawn from. Coincidence? I still tend to think so a little bit, as that is the negative side of me rearing its ugly head, but I am gonna keep trying regardless.

Anyone else read this book yet ? If so what do you think, how long has it been since you started trying it for yourself (if you have), and has it worked for you?

I have played this game from a different perspective when I went to a charismatic church. The "Universe" was called "God," and the Law of Attraction went under the name of Faith. You now, the "if you believe you will receive it" stuff. I have come to understand that faith is far more complicated than this, and you cannot manipulate God.

And I just realized I'd answered this before, LOL. That's what happens when I comment on something before I have a full pot of caffeine in me. :) Anyway, you can tell I feel strongly about it...I'd love to hear an update leighdhu on if you've kept practicing it or not and the results.

The irony is the Universe will even keep at it if you don't, which is why the positive thoughts are so important - if you say "my life is crap", it will comply to make it so, just in the same way as it will if you say "my life is wonderful." Amazing really. :)

I've not read it in full, just a quick flip through it in the bookstore. I've believed in the Law of Attraction for years before the Secret made it trendy. From what I've heard about the book though, it apparently leaves out one BIG thing. Action. You can't sit on your butt and expect things to happen if you don't do something to give the Universe a helping hand. Your check's the perfect example. You'll get the money - if you take action and switch. If you don't, you won't. The Universe has complied with your request- $100 in the mail. The rest is up to you.

Please tell me when you've finished it if it really doesn't mention taking any action in it.
To my mind you need the positive thoughts and beliefs PLUS action to help them manifest. You also need to raise your awareness to spot the opportunities when they are put under your nose. You need to be specific in your request as well. Not in how it will arrive as they said but in exactly what you want. If you had said " I want $100 in the mail with no strings attached to it", the result would have been different.

This theory's been around for decades and is nothing new, it's just not so creatively packaged until now. I am a complete believer in your thoughts creating your reality and have seen it manifest many, many times in my life - too many to not have faith in it. But I fear many will be disappointed if that crucial step of actually doing something to help it happen has been left out and will write it off as a fad.

Even though I'm a natural philosopher, and not religious in any way, I do tend to believe in these things. I'm actually fairly superstitious, and this is I believe in. I've often wished for things I really need, aside from things I actually want, and it's rare that the universe helps out, but when it does, it's a great help.

Shame that it doesn't grant "Peace and quiet".

My wife bought the video when it first came out. We both believe in the law of attraction. I used to use it for things as simple as finding a parking space in a crowded city and it often worked. I think the law of attraction can be based on a simple phrase, "as you think, you are".

It is always true and i believe in this. I feel like what ever i think, it will happen. I have many times felt like i will accomplish the task, i will do it. At the same time, i had many thoughts that i would fail and i have failed too. Its all our attitude. Elder people used to say that are some vibrations always around us which will make things happen on what we think. So it is always better to think and act positively.

I think there was a movie - not sure which one now - where a character utters the line "Your focus determines your reality." I suppose it's a hokey linem but it makes perfect sense.

Scribbler,

I agree. So many have read "The Secret" among other books and materials dealing with the law of attraction, and they think just because they demand it, they can just sit back and let it happen. You have to take steps to make it happen as well. You can't say you want the next Pulitzer Prize when you don't pick up a pen and start to write.

Yep you are right JanuaryGirl. The Secret isn't really something that is brand new. It has been around for centuries. They do acknowledge this in to book too, but I am sure their main agenda was to sell, sell, and sell more. I think it's good to have a reminder of positive thinking packaged in new material every once in again though.

I wonder if the authors of that book "told" the universe that they were going to become multi-millionaires by re-packaging an age old concept and selling it to people under the guise of it being some kind of amazing new discovery. The concept of the laws of attraction are simple and time tested, but the hype around The Secret is a bit much to stomach.

I believed in the laws of attraction long before The Secret was published. Your thoughts shape your reality, good or bad ones, I'm convinced of it. I'd add that you should take steps to open the doors (eg it's hard to get published if you don't submit your work to publishers...you need to meet the universe halfway at least lol) and be as specific as you can about what you want. For example, if you'd got that check because someone had died that you cared a lot for and they'd left you it in their will, how would you feel? Or if you'd tripped and hurt yourself and it was a compensation payment. I always add "and no harm shall come to anyone nor me in order for this to come to pass" or something like that. :)

Exactly...I have noticed when I used to call in sick to work, I would actually end up catching a cold or something. Funny how things work like that isn't it ?
